Comparing Healthy vs. the Junk

Most nights I crave junk food, potato chips, ice cream, leftover pizza, etc..., but I know that it is terrible for me. What are the advantages of junk food? It tastes good, that's it. It's fattening, greasy, and filled with chemicals and such. Unfortunately this is what most people go to for a late night snack.

What about healthier snacks? I know that most midnight fridge raiders won't be reaching for the bag of carrots or a salad, but there are still plenty of healthy snacks out there. Personally I like fresh fruit, fruit smoothies, and fruit salad. They aren't as satisfying as a bag of chips or a bowl of popcorn, but they'll keep us from packing on the pounds and will help us get to sleep a little better. Personally I would recommend a peanut butter and banana smoothie or apple slices/celery sticks with peanut butter spread on them. Its something a little healthier but still enjoyable.

Changing Things Up

The refrigerator, the demon that calls out to us at night, is always the easy option when we have cravings at night. Far too often we reach for the tub of ice cream in the freezer. I am no exception. Why do so many people crave sweets at night? I certainly don't have a sweet tooth, in fact the only time I ever eat sweets is a little after dinner or later at night. Maybe out internal clock just tells us we need some sugar in our system. That's my best guess. Even so, eating dessert late at night always gives me a stomach ache and I end up regretting it the next morning, therefore, I've decided to change up my routine a little bit.

Instead of just grabbing whatever's there, I've decided that I'll me making my own midnight snacks from now on. I've been craving something a little more savory at night recently, so I tried this little recipe for some home-made pizza that I found on another website:

Tortilla-Pizza

Personally I enjoyed it. It was easy to make and satisfied all of my cravings until the next morning. I would highly recommend this. It might be a little too much food one night, so I saved the leftovers for the next night.

Introduction
With this blog I’ll be posting recipe ideas along with why I think that it makes a great midnight snack. I want these recipes to reach a wide variety of people so I’ll be posting ideas for comfort foods, healthy snacks, gluten free, vegetarian, foods that will help you get back to sleep, and much more. As a teenager and college student, I don’t have many diet restrictions and just eat what I want, whenever, and what’s cheap. However, there are a lot of people who have strict diets and there are foods they can’t eat, so I hope that these recipes reach as many people as it can.
